The unique environment of the tiny kona coffee belt, only about 2 miles by 15 miles, creates the ideal growing conditions for premium quality coffee beans. Coffee trees flourish on the kona volcanic slopes under warm morning sunshine and afternoon cloud cover. Individually hand-picking the coffee cherries at the peak of ripeness, our coffee is then sun-dried to bring out its characteristic flavor. I got an iron, hehe. But then again, I was asked to choose between that and a coffee grinder. I chose the iron because I knew we would get a coffee grinder, regardless!!!! 
(he did call maybe 3 times to ask, are you sure???) and next weekend I get a real live plant! Which I told Kolya I'd rather have then a rose or something that'll die in a few days… the plant I can look at forever!

Between “glurk-glurk-glurk-SPLAT!” and “a little thingy that moves around a series of slots near the dealybob where the thing attaches to the other thing and the handle goes in”….I love you, you know.
I'm hearing the glurk-splat combo EVERY MORNING because a certain elderly cat who seems to have lost all his teeth and so can only eat wet food for the first time in his almost 16 years won't eat the wet stuff after a few hours because of course it's all dried out and icky and so he's overly hungry in the morning (and by morning I mean o-dark-thirty) and pukes because of what I assume is a combination of pique and low blood sugar.
Sorry, I got all stream of consciousness there, but it's an ISSUE right now. And all before the merest hint of coffee.
And I love you because you can make a story including cat vomit and inane coffee grinders somehow come out all romantic and stuff.

Starbucks roasts to a very dark roast. That is, they burn the beans. You might try the same recipe with different beans, look for a medium roast. For some reason, most of what you can buy seems to be dark roasting. Check out for a look at roast intensity. Probably you can find a city roast somewhere, but a lot of stuff sold seems to be “dark” or “French”. These are going to carry a little of the char flavor.
My experimentation has revealed that the burned flavor is strongly controlled by the temperature, C/W ratio, and extraction time. It is likely that using a different roast from what I used will result in a sub-optimal cup. Grind is an uncontrolled variable too, and since you don't have a Detestitron, you'll definitely be different there.
Aloha Aunty. We were there back in March and the coffee, the grinds, the aloha was all so wonderful. Got us one smoothie, some gifts and some salty & blue balls.
